Expansion of Opus Dei

Opus Dei was founded in Madrid in 1928 by Monsignor Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer y Albas and in 1947 obtained the Decretum laudis of the Holy See, which gave him three years after final approval as a secular institute. In 1982, it was erected as a personal prelature by Pope John Paul II.

Since the 1940 Opus Dei won a growing influence beyond the English borders, settling first in Portugal. During the decade following the organization would reach all corners of the Catholic world, although its main bases of settlement are still Europe and South America. Since 1946 the organization's influence on the Vatican's central power agencies grew by shifting Escriva his residence to Rome. From there he directed until his death on Secular Institute.
